Perez Hilton’s children were reportedly made aware of their dad’s mental health struggles before his recent hospitalisation, as his family continues to support him through his recovery.

The update comes after it was revealed that Perez will be allowed to see his children while his mother, Teresita Lavandeira, has temporary legal custody of them, but there are conditions attached.

According to court documents, Perez must first receive psychiatric clearance before seeing his children, with any visits supervised. The arrangement will remain in place unless a judge changes the order, or Perez and his mum agree to a different setup.

Teresita was officially granted temporary legal custody, with the court noting that Perez is the children’s only legal parent and that he agreed to the arrangement.

Now, sources close to the family have said Perez’s children are old enough to understand what has been happening with their dad.

Insiders told TMZ that his condition had ‘been explained to them’ before the crisis. They also said the children had previously been at home during emotional moments when Perez went live online and spoke openly about what he was going through.

Perez’s mum has reportedly ‘always lived’ with him and his children and has played a major role in helping to raise them.

She will now continue looking after the children as their grandmother, with the family hoping this will give them ‘familiarity and consistency’ while Perez begins what is expected to be a long recovery.

Lavandeira’s lawyer told Page Six: ‘My main concern and objective, as well as the family’s, is to protect the children and make sure they are safe.

‘We want them to have some sense of normalcy as they begin their journey of healing after the tragic events that occurred last week.’

The latest development comes after Perez’s family confirmed that he was still in a ‘serious but stable’ condition in hospital.

His hospitalisation followed a worrying livestream from his home in Miami, which sparked widespread concern for the celebrity blogger.
