Heavy rain causes flooded roads and business closures across Lancaster and Morecambe

Many businesses across Lancaster and Morecambe had to remain closed or delay opening times on Thursday 20th August, with traffic and bus routes also severely affected by flooding

Due to heavy rain, several business across Lancaster and Morecambe have been forced to close and traffic is severely affected by flooding in the area.

Areas across the district affected by flooding include Hala, Scotforth Road, Brook Street, Dallas Road, Carr House Lane and Willow Lane in Lancaster, as well as Marine Road and Westgate in Morecambe and under Torrisholme Road bridge.

According to the Hazelrigg rainfall gauge near Lancaster University, the area has dealt with 43.6mm within the past 24 hours (since 3;15pm on 19th August).

Several pubs in the Lancaster and Morecambe area have reported that they will remain closed for the day, or delay their opening time, because of flooding.

The White Cross on Lancaster Canal announced that, due to flooding in the venue’s bar area, the business will remain closed until 12pm on Friday 21st August.

Bier and Twist on Market Square has also reported their closure due to flooding: “Unfortunately, we’ve had to close due to multiple leaks in the building, which has caused flooding and means we’re unable to open safely at the moment.

“If you have a booking with us, we’ll be in touch shortly with an update.

“We’re very sorry for the inconvenience and really appreciate your patience and understanding. We’ll keep you updated and hope to be back open as soon as possible!”

The Station Promenade in Morecambe announced: “Due to excessive flooding we unfortunately have had to delay our usual opening time of 11am.

“Our wonderful team are armed with mops, wet vacs and wellies in order to get opened up as soon as we can.

“Please keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates.”

The business later confirmed their opening at 1:30pm on Thursday, adding: “Great news! Our doors are open. Thanks for your patience.”

Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s on Cable Street in Lancaster was also temporarily closed on Thursday morning due to flooding.

Stagecoach bus company reported diversion routes followed on the 100 service in the Bowerham and Hala areas on Thursday morning, as well as on the 11 service due to the flooding on Willow Lane.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service released safety advice for residents on Thursday afternoon: “Please don’t drive through flood water even if you think it isn’t that deep.

“If you are concerned about your property make sure you turn off electrics and where possible move items to a higher level or second floor.

“Do not walk through a flooded area, the flood water can be more powerful than you think. Keep an eye out for travel and safety advice.”
