Gymskin reveals why he says ‘wahey’ and explains annoying catchphrase’s full origin story
You can’t escape it
Gymskin went on GKBarry’s podcast this week and she asked him the golden question, why does he always say “wahey”? Well, now we know.
The influencer from Essex blew up earlier this year after a video of him dancing to Madonna’s Into The Groove went viral. Now, he’s absolutely everywhere, and he always shouts “wahey” wherever he goes.
It’s become a UK-wide catchphrase and you literally can’t escape it, with people shouting “wahey” in his tone of voice at every festival, event or bar you go to. People even just shout it on trains or in the street, but where on earth does it come from?

Well, Gymskin, whose real name is Jack, told GKBarry on the Saving Grace podcast it’s something he’s been saying for years when he’s drunk. When you say “wahey” to someone they always tend to say it back, so it’s just a thing he’s always done on nights out.
“Believe it or not, I’ve said ‘wahey’ for years. Whenever I get drunk I go like ‘wahey, wahey’ I’m just ‘waheying’ all night,” he explained.
He never wanted to say it on a live stream because he knew that if he did, it would go crazy viral, but it slipped out one day while he was at one of American DJ MK’s events, and that’s exactly what happened.
“There was a stream, and we went to MK’s live performance. We were on the live, and I got drunk, and I was in his dressing room, and I was just drinking the vodka, and my brother went ‘Do you wanna say it?’ and I went ‘Don’t be silly, I’m not gonna say that on live,” he said.

“I turned around on the live stream and I said ‘If I say, like how I say wahey to my chat, I guarantee everyone will say it. It will be in your head’. Then they went ‘Say it’ and I went ‘Wahey’ and then I just went mad all night.”
He got really drunk and was “waheying” all night. “All of a sudden, half the nation’s saying it,” he said. And the rest is history.
Now, he’s getting sent videos of people doing the “wahey” in Dubai, Australia and all over the world. It’s an epidemic.
