Here’s how to avoid the dreaded summer blues as a recent Liverpool graduate
Congratulations! Your late night shifts in the SJ, endless coffees and dissertation panics have finally paid off
The summer after graduating university is bound to be full of all kinds of experiences and emotions. Whether you’re moving back to your childhood room or attempting to fit every item of clothing into a backpack and jetting off to Australia, it’s definitely a big change.
Rather than spending the entire summer gazing out of your bedroom window while listening to your sad playlist on repeat, here are a few ways to make post-uni life feel like a fun new chapter without existential dread taking over.
Craft

Coming out of the trenches of exam season and being greeted with having nothing to do is a feeling that is unmatched. However, it quickly turns into the dread of how to fill your days. This happens when it’s not socially acceptable to rise from your room at 4pm.
Reconnect with your inner child, dig out the arts and crafts tablecloth and go wild with all things glitter glue and felt-tip. It’s good for the soul.
Touch grass

Gone are the days of rotting on the sofa with your housemates… that won’t get you a grad scheme. Hungover mornings are now replaced by following your mum round Tesco. This usually happens when she’s doing the weekly shop.
But fear not. Fun employment doesn’t always have to be boring. Do a quick TikTok search for the best “hidden gems” near you and put your Salomon’s that have only seen the inside of coffee shops to good use.
Go travelling

If you’re lucky enough to not yet have maxed out your overdraft, then Skyscanner is your best friend. Reward yourself for all that hard work. Treat yourself to a city break to get rid of those post-grad fears or spend a long weekend on the coast.
Journal

If journaling is something that is always included in your New Year’s resolutions but never seems to happen, then now’s the time to start. Moving back home after uni can be a bit of a culture shock. So let those emotions out and channel your inner Bridget Jones.
Create a new playlist
What better way to greet a new phase of your life than a playlist with songs that hold all the memories. Sing along with Meryl Streep to Slipping Through My Fingers and mourn the walks home from the library with your besties. Gone, but never forgotten.
Movie night

Sometimes, the only thing that does the trick is some picky bits and rewatching a comfort show. Missing your uni pals? Why not start the same series at the same time so you can feel like you’re watching together.
Be kind to yourself
Take a walk around your home town. Blast your favourite music. Redecorate your room to help you not feel 16 again. And don’t forget to embrace the oddness of post-grad life; it won’t feel weird forever, I promise.
