Right, did Kylie Jenner actually start the bedazzled gem trend taking over TikTok right now?!

Everyone is bedazzling their cups and phones again

If you’ve noticed rhinestones suddenly appearing on everything from matcha cups to face masks, you’re not imagining it. Bedazzling is officially back, and Kylie Jenner may have something to do with it.

The iconic Y2K trend has made a very sparkly comeback, with people rediscovering the joy of sticking tiny gems onto basically anything that stays still long enough.

And one person who appears to have helped send the trend into overdrive is Kylie Jenner, who celebrated her 29th birthday last week with a completely bedazzled birthday cake, covered in colourful gems that looked like something straight out of a 2000s teen bedroom.

Soon enough, rhinestones seemed to be everywhere. People have been decorating their cups, phones, clothes, face masks and even their bodies with tiny jewels. And yes, some people have even been bedazzling their pets.

It’s also become a TikTok staple, with bedazzling kits popping up all over the platform and sellers cashing in on our sudden obsession with making everything unnecessarily sparkly.

The resurgence feels very Y2K, when bedazzling was basically a way of life. If you had a phone case, pair of jeans or diary that wasn’t covered in glittering gems, were you even doing it right?

But did Kylie actually start it?

Well, probably not. Some people have pointed out that Zara Larsson was experimenting with the bedazzled look long before Kylie’s birthday, suggesting the trend was already bubbling away.

So, no, Kylie probably didn’t invent bedazzling. The trend has been around for decades, and Y2K fashion has been bringing it back in waves.

But if you feel like you’ve suddenly started seeing rhinestones absolutely everywhere, Kylie’s birthday cake might have been the moment the trend really went into overdrive.

Of course, not everyone is thrilled about the comeback. People have raised concerns about how environmentally friendly the trend actually is, while others have questioned the practicality of having tiny gems glued to literally everything you own.

Still, practicality has never exactly been the point of bedazzling. If anything, the whole appeal is making something completely unnecessary, slightly ridiculous and very sparkly.
