Cardiff SU confirms the fire alarm at YOLO was ‘maliciously’ set off on purpose

The SU’s statement condemns the act but praises the overall student response

In a statement posted to Instagram on Thursday afternoon, Cardiff SU has now said the fire alarm at Y Plas was “maliciously” and intentionally set off.

Students were evacuated from Wednesday’s weekly YOLO club night in the Y Plas venue at approximately 9:50pm, causing almost 3,000 revellers to spill onto Park Place and Senghenydd Road.

It was later revealed exclusively to The Cardiff Tab that the alarm was caused by an individual  “elbowing” a fire alarm on the club’s first floor.

However, the SU has since gone on to refute claims that the alarm was activated unintentionally whilst condemning the behaviour of the individual who caused the incident.

The SU has also praised the “absolutely amazing” response from the students present “in a situation that can easily cause panic”.

This is not the first time in recent months that the SU club night has been involved in a incident due to the behaviour of attendees. Back in October, Cardiff University gained national attention after it was forced to ban blue shirts and chinos from being worn at club nights, following alleged continued violence in the entrance queues.
