The Celebrity Traitors’ launch date has leaked, with bosses teasing ‘never seen before’ details

The wait for The Celebrity Traitors is almost over, and we may now know exactly when the chaos is about to begin.

The BBC has been keeping details of the second series of its celebrity spin-off pretty tightly under wraps, with only little snippets of information being confirmed so far. But now, presenter Richard Osman appears to have accidentally let slip the launch date, despite the date supposedly being under embargo.

During a live recording of The Rest Is Entertainment podcast at London’s Southbank Centre on Saturday, Richard was joined by former Celebrity Traitors finalist Joe Marler and journalist Marina Hyde.

While discussing what advice he would give the incoming cast, Joe seemingly dropped the date, asking: “What is it, September 23rd, the next series?”

And rather than dodging the question, Richard appeared to confirm it.

“By the way, to point out, it’s absolutely embargoed that it starts on September 23rd … let’s talk about what we call the events of September 23rd this year … the cat’s out of the bag isn’t it? Not to repeat it,” he said.

So, unless the pair have somehow managed to pull off an extremely elaborate Traitors-style deception, it looks like The Celebrity Traitors will return this month, and there’s already reason to believe series two could be very different from the first.

Richard said that, from what he had heard from people involved with the new series, it “sounds like it was quite intense”.

Joe, who made it to the final of the first series, also suggested the atmosphere among this year’s celebrities was noticeably different.

“I believe it was a slightly different emotion than our experience. Ours was very laugh-led, and everyone was sort of enjoying catching up, you know, pratting about to the point where they went: ‘Guys, we’re trying to play a game.’”

He continued: “It’s not just for the laughs – ‘Oh, do you remember going to that party, darling?…’

“Whereas this lot really want it from the start, and then I guess they see how well the first series has gone and there’s a little bit of pressure on them to be like: ‘Oh I’d quite like a bit of that.’”

Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival last month, BBC Director of Entertainment Ed Havard promised viewers that the second series would deliver moments that haven’t happened before.

“Things happen that you didn’t think could happen on Traitors and have never seen before,” he said.

Which is, frankly, a slightly terrifying thing to hear when you consider everything that happened in the first series.

The full cast for series two has already been announced, and it is absolutely stacked. Among the celebrities heading to the castle are Amol Raja, Bella Ramsey, Hannah Fry, James Acaster, James Blunt, Jerry Hall, Joanne McNally, Joe Lycett, Julie Hesmondhalgh, King Kenny, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Maya Jama, Michael Sheen, Miranda Hart, Myha’la, Richard E. Grant, Rob Beckett, Romesh Ranganathan, Ross Kemp, Sebastian Croft and Sharon Rooney.
