It’s a bit brutal

HBO’s blockbuster Harry Potter reboot has already managed to cast pretty much every major character we’ll meet in its first season, which is set to arrive at Christmas this year. But there is still one particularly important name missing from the line-up: Voldemort.
Earlier this week, social media was particularly convinced that Ralph Fiennes could be returning to the role he played in the original Harry Potter films. Viral tweets claimed that Fiennes would be reprising his version of the Dark Lord for the HBO series. However, those rumours are not true.
But there has been another Voldemort theory floating around for quite a while now – and this one involves Oscar winner Cillian Murphy.
Murphy’s name has repeatedly been thrown into the conversation about who could replace Fiennes as Voldemort, with people deciding that his extremely intense acting style makes him a natural fit for the role.

However, if you were hoping the rumours might actually be true, Murphy has now made his position very, very clear.
When asked directly by The Times whether he was involved in the new Harry Potter series, Murphy simply replied: “I’m categorically not,” before adding: “Can you make that the headline?”
The actor is famously pretty “off the grid” compared to many of his Hollywood counterparts and has largely stayed away from the constant online speculation surrounding him. In fact, Murphy has previously admitted that he “didn’t know anything about” the rumours that he could be taking over as Voldemort.
Speaking previously on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Murphy explained that it would be “really hard” to follow on from Ralph Fiennes’ performance as Voldemort in the original films.
He also addressed the rumours on the podcast, making it clear that he has no involvement with the HBO reboot and acknowledging just how daunting it would be to take on a character that Fiennes made so iconic.
For now, at least, the identity of the actor who will play the Dark Lord remains one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding the reboot.
