Five dark details about JP Miller that Death of the Pastor’s Wife completely missed out

Death of the Pastor’s Wife on Netflix already doesn’t paint a good picture of JP Miller. But, it would seem there was so much more the series could have said. 

The three-part show is all about his former wife Mica Miller, and the alleged abuse she suffered before she took her own life. It is mainly focused on her marriage to pastor John-Paul “JP” Miller, and the events surrounding her death in April 2024.  

Mica and JP were married, but their relationship was allegedly filled with abuse and hurt. In the end, Mica ended things. Just two days after she formally served Miller with divorce papers, she was found dead. She had died from a gunshot wound, in an apparent suicide. 

Despite the show telling us plenty of what happened, lots about JP was missed out of Death of the Pastor’s Wife on Netflix.

JP Miller’s criminal past was missed out

Netflix didn’t include that JP Miller has two previous convictions. The pastor’s two earlier convictions took place in the 1990s, with one being for driving under suspension, in March 1998. The second, and most serious, was an assault and battery charge of a “high and aggravated nature” in June 1999.

According to filings, the pastor hit a woman with his truck and drove for 100 yards with her on the hood of his vehicle. He claimed she was harassing him. For hitting the woman with his car, he was handed a four-year suspended sentence, three years of probation, and 500 hours of community service.

In 2022, he was pardoned on those convictions after the court was satisfied by him carrying out the sentences. It called him a “law abiding citizen.”

He was also accused of assaulting a protestor outside of Solid Rock 

After Mica’s death, as we saw on Netflix, Solid Rock Church was constantly surrounded by protestors appealing for justice for Mica. The protests went on for months, and eventually there was an incident outside the church where John-Paul was arrested for allegedly assaulting a protester.

Shortly after, Solid Rock Church closed its doors. Three months later, John-Paul sold the land on which Solid Rock was built, reportedly for $2.1million. It’s been claimed the church will be torn down, and the land will be turned into condos.

And he was accused of r*pe

JP was accused of the r*pe of a 15-year-old girl, when he was 19. JP has continued to strongly deny these allegations.

The filmmaker behind the Death of a Pastor’s Wife series explained why they left this out of the series, and said: “In no way were we trying to excuse JP’s actions. Without JP participating, or without his dad participating, we couldn’t go into too much detail.”

A revealing interview was cut by Netflix

During the Netflix series, we briefly saw JP Miller sit down opposite NewsNation’s Rich McHugh, and break down in tears. However, a very interesting part of this interview was cut out. 

McHugh directly asked JP whether he had abused his wife. JP immediately denied this, and told McHugh: “Never. Not once in any way, shape or form.”

He then insisted that he had taken “better care than anybody could ever take care”, before he added: “I never asked her to clean the house, not once in seven years of marriage, she never had to work, she was never harmed in any physical way.” 

McHugh then brought up the apology letter Miller wrote, which we saw the lawyer in the Netflix doc claim was proof of his guilt. She argued he wouldn’t apologise, if he hadn’t done those things. 

In the cut interview, JP was asked about several things he had apparently apologised for, including putting razor blades in Mica’s tyres, tracking her and posting a naked photograph of her online.

JP acknowledged that the letter was genuine, but disputed the circumstances surrounding some of the things mentioned in it. He claimed Mica had been refusing to take her medication, and told him she would only agree to take it if he gave her $10k and wrote her an apology letter.

The docuseries mostly left out JP and Mark’s friendship

Before JP’s wife was the worship leader at Solid Rock, it was his close friend Mark Kaufman. We saw him in the doc, but plenty was not mentioned.

According to a now-deleted blog post by podcaster Beth Braden, Mark was the one who helped start Solid Rock’s “paradise” – secular songs they turned into worship songs. Throughout the Netflix doc, we see clips of Mica singing these parodies. When JP left the church after his affair with Mica was exposed, Mark was allegedly one of the main people who convinced him to come back.
