How Netflix’s Death of the Pastor’s Wife could change what happens at JP Miller’s trial

Netflix’s new true crime documentary Death of the Pastor’s Wife has brought the case of US pastor JP Miller back into the spotlight, and it could even have an impact on his upcoming trial.

The documentary follows the life and death of Mica Miller, JP Miller’s wife, who died in April 2024. Her death was officially ruled a suicide, but people close to her have continued to raise questions about what happened before she died.

Now, a journalist who has followed the case from the beginning says some of the new details in the Netflix series could lead to further investigation.

Mica Miller was married to South Carolina pastor John-Paul “JP” Miller. Before her death, Mica called 911 and said she planned to take her own life, telling the operator that she wanted her family to find her.

She was later found dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina. Her death was officially determined to be a suicide caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. However, Mica’s friends and family have questioned the circumstances surrounding her death and have spoken about their concerns over her relationship with JP.

Despite all the attention around Mica’s death, the federal case against Miller is not currently a murder trial. Instead, he has been charged with cyberstalking Mica before her death. In simple terms, the case centres around allegations that he repeatedly harassed or monitored her online.

Now, Netflix’s documentary has brought other allegations about their relationship to a much bigger audience. Rich McHugh, an investigative correspondent for NewsNation who has been covering the case since it began, also features in Death of the Pastor’s Wife.

Speaking on Jesse Weber Live on Monday, he discussed allegations made by Mica’s friends and family about Miller’s behaviour towards her.

“They allege he threatened to harm her physically. He was forcing her to take drugs, committed her to hospitals without her permission,” McHugh said. “It was just a pattern of control that he was exerting over her.”

So, could the Netflix documentary affect his trial? According to McHugh, potentially.

“I know that there were certain things that they were looking at him for that are not included in the current charges that we’re seeing in federal court,” he said.

He then suggested that some of those issues could potentially lead to the case being investigated further.

“It involves things across state lines. I don’t want to go into too much. But yes, I think there are possibilities that could open this up.”

Basically, McHugh believes the allegations and information highlighted in the documentary could give authorities more reason to look into what happened before Mica’s death.

That doesn’t mean the Netflix documentary automatically changes the charges against Miller, or that he will face new charges. For now, the federal case is still focused on the allegations already brought against him.
