HBO just made two huge Harry Potter casting announcements, and recast Ginny Weasley

HBO has just dropped three pretty major casting announcements for season two of its new Harry Potter series, and yes, Dobby is officially coming.

The show has released actors for three key Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets characters: Dobby the House-elf, Ginny Weasley and Tom Riddle, aka the future Lord Voldemort.

First up, 17-year-old British actor, presenter and comedian Lenny Rush has landed the role of Dobby. The House-elf is introduced in Chamber of Secrets and eventually becomes one of the more memorable characters across the series.

Rush is probably best known for starring in the British children’s TV series The Dumping Ground, but he’s also appeared in Doctor Who and Taskmaster.

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Billy Barratt has been cast as Tom Riddle, the young version of the character who eventually becomes Lord Voldemort. He’s currently filming Amazon Prime’s adaptation of the hit narrative video game Life is Strange, where he’s playing antagonist Nathan Prescott.

And then there’s Ginny. HBO has confirmed that newcomer Bonnie Hill will take over the role of Ginny Weasley from season two onwards. She’ll be replacing Gracie Cochrane, who played Ginny in season one but won’t be returning for the rest of the series.

The official HBO Max Instagram account announced all three castings in one very dramatic post, writing:

The recasting of Ginny comes after young actress Gracie Cochrane, who portrays Ginny Weasley in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, confirmed she would be stepping away from the role after season one.

Cochrane and her family announced the news while production on the first season was coming to an end.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances Gracie has made the challenging decision to step away from her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO Harry Potter series after season one,” they said in a statement.

“Her time as part of the Harry Potter world has been truly wonderful, and she is deeply grateful to Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for creating such an unforgettable experience. Gracie is very excited about the opportunities her future holds.”
