14 types of students you’re guaranteed to meet in Freshers’ Week

There’s the one that takes it way too far, the first-time drinker and the one you wish you’d never met

You’re away from your family for the first time. The people you meet each day could go on to be lifelong friends. You’re finally gaining some extra independence. But, as always, first impressions count at the start of your university life. You don’t want to be known as the person who threw up all over the kitchen at pres.

Here are just some of the types of people you’ll stumble across during Freshers’ Week.

1. The one that’s not missed a single night out

They fell victim to the Freshers’ wristband. And they’re making sure they get the most out of their money.

This is the type of person who forces each of their flatmates to go to these events with them, even though they’ll have to pay double the entry price. They hype you up by saying, “it’ll be sold out,” but when you turn up, there’s only three other people in the club.

2. The gap year student

You just met. But somehow you know everything they did on their year abroad and how magical Thailand truly is.

“If you get the chance, you have to visit Bali.” A very underground destination.

3. The first-time drinker

Everyone takes it too far in Fresher’s Week, but there’s nothing quite like your flatmate who’s never drank before, let alone been drunk.

They’re throwing up in the toilet at the Guild’s official welcome party, and it’s not even 10pm.

Make sure they get home safe, but carry on partying into the early hours, it’s your Freshers’ Week too after all.

4. The non-drinker

They try, they do. They said on the group chat before you met them that they’d be there to hold your hair back and let you into the flat when you forgot your key. Yet somehow, they’ve ended up being a hermit who gives you dirty looks the next morning.

Of course, this doesn’t go for all non-drinkers, some really are the life of the party. We have no idea how they do it, respect.

5. The big spender

When you ask if they’ve received their loan yet, you never thought you’d get the response, “What’s a student loan?”

It may not be their fault they’re sheltered, but their constant disregard for everyone else is enough to rattle anyone.

And the M&S picky bits for lunch and takeaways for tea daily? Just rubbing it in now x

6. The studier

They’re eager to start classes, repeatedly asking if you’ve got your timetable yet, in case, somehow, they’re the only person who hasn’t received theirs yet.

When classes do start? They’re up every day going in for a 9am class (which they don’t have). They sit in the library all day, every day, constantly locked in.

Impressive. We hope you get that first, you deserve it.

7. The photographer

It might seem annoying at the time, but the morning after, when you don’t remember anything, you’ll be eternally grateful that you have pictures to jog your memory of what actually happened last night.

And sometimes, they’re even nice pictures!

8. The cheapskate

We all have to make sacrifices during Fresher’s Week, that’s not what we’re talking about. We’re talking about the person who moves in with practically nothing and asks to borrow your plates and cutlery (and never looks after them).

They also couldn’t get the Uber back from Concert Square last night because it “wouldn’t load.” They promise to pay you back, but you’ll never see that money.

Totally fine if you’re struggling with funds, but be respectful.

9. The neat freak

There’s always one flatmate who can’t believe how dirty student accommodation gets in two days. They weren’t prepared for the mental strain the mould in the sink was going to cause. Their solution? Deep clean everything.

Unfortunately, this often results in your messy flatmates never learning to clean up for themselves. A pattern not recommended to start for as long as you can live with the dirt.

10. The BNOC

Is it possible to gain BNOC status in Freshers’ Week? Absolutely. In fact, it’s the perfect time. Whether it’s the guy who’s somehow got with half of your accomodation or the girl who always out-dresses everyone.

There are many ways to become a Big Name On Campus, but how will you achieve that status?

11. The couple

When you were finally introduced to him, you thought he also lived in your flat because he’s been there every single day since you moved in.

He doesn’t speak or try to interact with anyone else, just follows his girlfriend around like she’ll disappear if she loses sight of her,

If you’re worried about this being you, try to avoid having any guests from home during Freshers’ Week, get used to being away from them and see them in a few weeks instead.

12. The fake friend

You see them every night of Freshers’ Week, they come to your pres, you really start seeing potential for a true friend.

But after Freshers’ they stop texting. A few weeks later, they’ve removed you on all forms of social media. Weird.

13. The cheater

You’ll absolutely know they have a partner because they don’t shut up about them. But when you see someone leaving their room the morning after a night out, you question things. But then you receive a warning before their partner comes to visit: please don’t tell them.

Great. Now you have to decide if you’re going to tell the unsuspecting partner and ruin your friendship with your flatmate. Would they even believe you?

14. The best friend(s)

Whether you find them in Fresher’s Week or not until later, uni is the place to find your best friends. Don’t put any pressure on it or stress yourself out. Of course, in a dream world, the people you meet in Fresher’s will also be the people you eventually watch graduate (but I was very lucky). You’ll find your people eventually.
