Soul Tree has applied for planning permission to build an outdoor terrace, angering the Cambridge University Catholic Association.

The proposed terrace would replace the club’s third floor and look out over the Fisher House Chaplaincy, where a number of students are resident.

The Association fears that an upstairs terrace full of raucous boozers would disturb the religious folk of the Church.

In a letter to planning bosses Dr Clare Daunton, Treasurer of the organisation, said CUCAs opposition was in part due to the “disturbing” noises of the “threatening” louts who use the club.

Daunton also complained that the proposed terrace would be on level with the chaplaincy’s bedrooms, raising privacy and noise concerns. CUCA claims that some of the chaplaincy’s windows are single-glazed even after the club’s owners forked out for double-glazing in 2006.

‘Booty Wonderland’?

‘Booty Wonderland’ on Fridays at Soul Tree is unlikely to impress those at Fisher House Chaplaincy, with bottom wigglers the only idols worshipped in this part of town past 9pm.

Worse still, the club plays host to ‘Source’ on a Saturday night, encroaching on the Sabbath.

The Tab’s columnist Will McAdam of Pembroke College was keen to add his two pennies worth to the debate.

“Well I am partial to a bit of idol worship myself, but I think throwing Soul Tree booties into the equation is a bit much”.

The plan to build the terrace is however supported by Catherine Linford, Cambridge Council’s planning officer, who believes that it may help to reduce noise disturbances, anti-social behaviour, and security issues caused by party-goers constantly leaving the building to smoke.

With the recent ruling on the wearing of crucifixes fresh in the memory, are we at risk of subjecting ourselves to damnation, or is it all worth it for a bit of ‘Booty Luv’?
