Economics lecturer who stormed out has been replaced for the rest of her first year module

Helene Turon was the subject of mean and offensive Yik Yaks

Helene Turon has been replaced for the rest of her first year classes.

The economics lecturer walked out of a maths and statistics lecture in protest after discovering comments written about her on Yik Yak by first year students.

A university email confirmed Dr Yanos Zylberberg will take over teaching her students.

Helene was unfairly targeted by first years who posted both insulting and sexual comments about her on the anonymous app Yik Yak.

After giving a speech to her first year class about how hurtful the comments had been, she walked out of a lecture and has not taught her class since.

Shortly afterwards, her tutorial class were told their next class with Helene was cancelled.

This cancellation was followed by an email sent by the department to all students previously taught by Helene which said her lectures would now be taken by Dr Yanos Zylberberg.

A complete replacement of lecturers this deep into term time (week nine) is unheard of.

First year Ben Skingsley said: “I’m really shocked. We knew something was up when the assignment lecture was cancelled. We feel bad because her walkout story has become so big based on the actions of only a few.”

Helene and the university have been approached for comment.
