Review: Jon Richardson

Read Carla’s review of funny man, Richardson’s performance at The Union

Being a comedian in St Andrews is a tricky business. We live in a melting pot which makes it virtually impossible to appease all senses of humour and cultures. However, star banter-box, Jon Richardson proved himself  as a top funny man, making everybody laugh at his quips in unison. In what was a stroke of genius on the part of the fresher’s timetable, Jon Richardson’s gig was a much-needed breath of fresh air. Starting with stand-up from our very own Leon O’Rourke, the audience proceeded to be entertained by the odd, yet eclectic humour of Lucy Bowman. She shared tales of crows, wagon wheels and Indian take-outs from the outlandish town of Hull. Varied and lighthearted, the performance was a great tickler of our sides in preparation for the big show…and a big show it was.

Richardson’s set was tailor made to our needs. It incorporated off American accents, ridicules of pier jumping and the game ‘Pins’. These St Andrews specific gags were peppered with trademark Richardson talents of; OCD, excessive self deprecation and a load of laughter at the sense of what being British really is. Not only did the event introduce a good sense of British humour but it also highlighting the class acts we have here in this little town (which at times can be unfairly overlooked). Ultimately the show united both new and returning students by sitting back in casuals, chilling out and ultimately pissing ourselves into the bargain. A good night was had by all.
