Five things you must do this week…

We’re back in the bubble and there’s no way we’re going to be bored…

Hands 4 Others Launch:

The lovely H40 ladies are holding their launch party this Thursday night. Help them out with their goal of providing wells to in-need villages by getting down to The Rule and partying with them and DJ Ashton Squires all for a measly £3. Simple. Ticket sales are Monday and Tuesday 12-4 at The Rule. Partying + Philanthropy = Perfection.

Sinners:

It’s sweaty. It’s sticky. It’s generally pretty disgusting. BUT, it’s kind of a St Andrews tradition and it certainly has its own unique ‘charm’. Having been away for two weeks, it might even be possible to repress memories of the horrors Sinners usually entails and embrace the grossness. So, put on your sports kit, grab your gear and get yourselves down to the Union on Wednesday night. But, make sure to get there before 11 because if there’s anything worse than actually being at Sinners (and there’s really not much), it’s the shame of being denied entry.

The Annual History Debate:

The Union Debating Society and the History Society are hosting their Annual History Debate this Thursday in Lower Parliament Hall with the motion “This House Would Sign the 1707 Act of Union” and it looks to be a heated and surprisingly relevant debate. The speakers are meant to be ‘representing’ historical figures so here’s hoping for the accents and costumes to suit. Plus there’s a port reception; what more could you want?

On The Rocks:

On The Rocks is pretty much the coolest thing to happen in St Andrews and if that testament isn’t enough to convince you to check it out, the range of events on offer and the surplus of celebrity patrons surely will. I mean, if Dame Helen Mirren is lending her support, who are you to ignore it?

The first weekend of the student-run arts festival starts off with a bang, as we’ve come to expect, with GallatheaSitara*100 100 Word PlaysCrystal Mirth etc. etc… I could go on but there really are too many great events to write about them all so, instead, check out the full event guide here.

Helen Mirren played The Queen. Helen Mirren supports On The Rocks. Therefore, The Queen is supporting On The Rocks (kind of).

Charities Campaign Summer Fair:

Speaking of On The Rocks, this Sunday brings our annual Charities Campaign Summer Fair in association with the Festival. Join in at St Mary’s Quad from 11-6 and listen to our beloved musical groups, play games, get your face painted, eat delights such as cake, ice cream and BBQed goodies, and, most importantly, vote for next year’s charities! Reps from each nominated charity are there during the day and you can also talk to the Charities Team and hear all about their wonderful work. This event is free but make sure you give generously as all proceeds benefit this year’s charities!

Finally…

And, because this week has so much stuff going on, a sixth thing you cannot miss –  Thursday brings St Andrews Cancer Awareness Day. Unless you’ve been living under a rock the past two weeks the #nomakeupselfie trend can’t have escaped you and, whether you’re for or against selfies, cancer awareness is in no way a bad thing (in fact, it’s a very very good thing) – so check out the event here to continue to join in and support such a worthy cause.
