10 students, including Association President and resident cupid, Freddie Fforde, are running a seemingly impossible 26.2 mile marathon in order to raise money for the Students’ Association Bursary Fund.

The group includes students of all running abilities, and they’ve been training together to meet their shared goal. Each student has set donation targets of £600, and are asking donors to donate either 600 “anniversary pennies” or £26.2. This money will go towards funding students otherwise unable to attend St Andrews.

Fforde said of his experience so far, “The most I’ve ever run is the length of North Street to get in to the Union before late doors… The team can definitely do this together, but we need your support, so please support us with just 600 pence or £26.20 – if you’re having a good day. It could be worse, you could be running 26.2 miles.” Quite right, Freddie, quite right.

Meanwhile, Georgia, the only female runner currently on the team, said that she spontaneously decided to participate when she saw an open invite in one fateful Wednesday memo: “I’ve never run before but thought it would be great to start something completely new.”

The students recently met with the University Chancellor, Sir Menzies Campbell MP, to launch their fundraising campaign. Campbell himself was a sprinter, competing in the 1964 Olympics, so he’s no stranger to mingling with professional runners. A hard legacy to live up to, but Campbell did it even without The Stand backing him, so we’re sure the runners will succeed.
