After stumbling home from Dervish at 2:30am on Friday night, devouring a box of chips (and maybe a pizza too) I interrogated everyone I knew in preparation for this extremely informative article on what they’d thought of Bongo Ball. “5 STARS!!!” was what I got in response.
This was my second year as a Bongoer, and this year was even better than the last. For starters, for £28, I received transportation, two drink tokens, an hour of dancing to an amazing Zambula band (I got a little too excited and splurged £10 on their cd), five DJs, and, most importantly, a free burger (highlight of the evening). A new addition this year was a very chilled ‘chill out tent’ which I can’t say I remember much of, other than that chilled people were dancing to chilled music in there.
The Zambula band definitely made the night. Watching that lady shake her bootay was amazing. Their music is so good that I think they should play at every event (I have listened to them on repeat today while busting out an essay – £10 well spent).
My only complaint of the night was how absolutely freezing it was. Is it just me or is Crail Airfield located in the arctic? If you managed to sprint between the dance-floor, ‘chill out tent’ and burger station without being blown into a field, then you got lucky. Of course this is no one’s fault but dear old Scotland.
Overall, I loved the Bongo enthusiasm. Bongo exudes a kind of I-don’t-really-give-a-shit-how-stupid-I-look-in-this-elephant-suit-I-am-way-more-comfortable-than-you-stumbling-in-your-mini-dress-and-stillettos vibe. And I love it.
I found myself attacking random guys in leopard morph suits just because I thought they looked awesome. Personally, I opted to leave the borderline-stripper leopard dress at home this year in favour of a more casual leopard vibe (at what other event can you say that, huh?).
Needless to say, Bongo was a great start to the Halloween weekend. Maybe I’m not being entirely objective here, but I also think you must have no soul if you can’t enjoy some sweet African beats all in the name of charity.
Great music. Great drinks. Great people. I love being Bongoed. Five stars!
