On the afternoon of Tuesday 23rd April, a memorial bench in the Valley Gardens was vandalised and the University are currently looking for any witnesses or anyone with further information to come forward.

A white stone bench donated by the family of Professor Caroline Thomas, Pro Vice Chancellor, was lifted and broken in half; the incident occured in the Valley Gardens, located on the Highfield Campus‚ behind the Jubilee Sports Hall and Students’ Union building.

Professor Caroline Thomas was a leading academic in Politics and International Relations, who had worked at the University for 25 years, and passed away in 2008. In a press statement released about the criminal damage, it was said that Professor Thomas was loved by many people, and that the significance of her memory is very important.

University Security are asking for anyone who was in the area between 3pm and 4:30pm, with any information, to please come forward and contact Deputy Head of Security Richard Ironmonger on 02380 593963 or [email protected].
