There were four shootings in Sheffield on VE day alone

Sheffield was plagued with four shootings on Bank Holiday Friday, in part of what appears to be a dramatic rise in gun crime across the city.

Four men were injured in a series of firearm-related incidents across Burngreave, Sharrow and Nether Edge.

DCI Jamie Henderson said: “Gun crime destroys lives and tears families apart. I’ve seen people in these type of crimes lose brothers, fathers and friends.

“We believe these incidents to be targeted, however we understand that the local community may have concerns around the associated risks with this type of crime.”

The first shooting took place on Grimesthorpe Road in Burngreave in the early hours of Friday morning, where three men were injured.

The police were then called to Sharrow, where a 53-year-old man had been shot in both the arm and leg. Just before 7pm, police were also called to Machon Bank in Nether Edge, after receiving reports of crossfire between two groups of men.

Shortly after, the police were called out again, following more reports of guns at a different address. There were no casualties but the police did find a firearm, two damaged vehicles, and one broken window.

It comes just months after a man was seriously injured metres away from Sheffield uni campus and a double shooting in Sheffield.

The police acknowledged that these incidences are alarming for local residents and patrolled the nearby areas to offer reassurance.

DCI Henderson added: “I understand the concern that incidents like these cause within the local community, and I would like to reassure everyone that we are doing all we can to build up a picture of the circumstances surrounding both of these incidents.”
