Sheffield University world ranking 2024

University of Sheffield moves up rankings to 18th in UK, according to new league table

The university also ranked in the top five for eight subjects

The University of Sheffield has placed 18th and Sheffield Hallam has placed 85th in The Good University Guide that was published last week by The Times and Sunday Times.

Last year, the University of Sheffield was placed 20th and has moved up two places this year. Sheffield Hallam has moved down three places, having been ranked 82nd in last year’s tables.

The University of Sheffield received eight top five subject rankings. These were mostly in engineering subjects, such as a fifth place in electrical engineering and a fourth in materials technology. Other high subject rankings were third places in nursing and town & country planning

In the rankings, the University of Sheffield attained a position of third in the “North and North East” region, with 85% of graduates going on to graduate-level employment or further study.

The rankings also noted the university’s new social sciences building “The Wave” and “award-winning students’ union”.

In a statement on the University of Sheffield’s website, Professor Koen Lamberts, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, said: “Providing our students with an outstanding student experience is incredibly important to us at Sheffield and I am pleased that the University has been recognised for its world-class learning and teaching offer.

“Sheffield students have access to internships and placements with globally-recognised employers as part of their studies and our teaching ensures they are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a competitive job market. I am proud of the difference our students go on to make when they embark upon their careers and we will continue to provide students with the leading educational experience Sheffield is known for.”

Sheffield Hallam received a ranking of 21st in the country for social inclusion. According to the rankings, SHU recruits 8th highest proportion of their students from deprived areas (24%). More than half of Hallam graduates are the first member of their family to go to university.

The Times and Sunday Times’ The Good University Guide provides the definitive guide for students for 132 UK universities, using the latest data across every category from degree completion rates to graduate employability.

The recent rankings come after the University of Sheffield was ranked as the best university in the country according to the National Student Survey earlier this summer.
