Hallam students organise fundraising events to raise money for Sheffield charities

A group of final year students from Sheffield Hallam University are hoping to raise money for three local charities through a series of fundraising events.

The events, which are made possible through an events management module, will donate money to Cavendish Cancer Care, The Children’s Hospital Trust and Weston Park Cancer Charity, with similar projects raising over £450,000 over the last 12 years.

The Head of Fundraising at Cavendish Cancer Care, Kirsty White, spoke of the charity’s appreciation for the students. She said: “We are really grateful to be supported by the Sheffield Hallam Events Management students with their events, especially being an alumnus myself.

It’s fantastic to see the budding events professionals bring their ideas to life and raise money for local charities at the same time. Events like these are vital to providing income to fund our service, which supports anyone affected by cancer with free of charge support.”

This year, the city will see an inflatable obstacle challenge, drag queen bingo and a Peaky Blinders-themed murder mystery, among other events, as part of the fundraising effort.

The final year students begin with no money and must go through personal challenges or fundraising activities to pay for the events’ production costs.

One of the students involved, Chloe Twist, said: “I’m really excited to see our event come together to raise as much awareness and as much money as possible for these three amazing charities. After four years of studying at Sheffield Hallam University, it is great to be able to put all the learning into practice to give back to Sheffield based charities and the community.

Events are supported by several local businesses, either through sponsorship or the donation of prizes for raffles or auctions, helping to raise even more for charity.

Tickets for Sheffield’s famous Tramlines festival, the Utilita Arena’s Girls Aloud concert, ABBA night at The Leadmill and football games for both Sheffield teams are all up for grabs.

2024’s events begin on 5th April, with ‘Glam Bingo’. Hosted at The Hide by drag queen Emma Maezin, it’s the first in a series taking place at other venues like The Mowbray, Genting Casino and Whirlow Hall Farm.

Jane Tattersall, principal lecturer in events management, spoke about the students involved in the events and their impact: “The charities are very close to our hearts, so our students have worked incredibly hard to stage their events.”

They are so professional with the events’ organisation and in their engagement with the businesses they work with, that we’re very proud and confident in their future success in the industry. We can’t wait to welcome everyone to the events and see the outcome of everything they’ve accomplished!”

Dr Sam Giove, Director of Sheffield Business School, added: “I’m delighted to see another year of events management students planning and delivering a series of professional events.”

Engaging with businesses is at the heart of what we do at Sheffield Business School and these students do this whilst supporting a range of amazing Sheffield charities.”

Tickets and information for all events involved in the fundraising effort can be found on the Hallam Charity Events website, will all profits being donated to this year’s three chosen charities.
