All you need to know about festive sandwiches

This will be the most important thing you read all day

There’s one thing better than Christmas itself, and that’s turkey in between two slices of bread.

Here we rate all the important things so you don’t have to: turkey to stuffing ratio, quality of bread, and overall festiveness of the sandwich.

Sainsbury’s

As part of the £3 meal deal range, this festive offering certainly doesn’t disappoint if you’re after value for money and a packet of crisps on the side.

It’s fair to say though there’s few, if any, crisps which could successfully complement a sandwich so diverse, and sadly the quality of the sandwich does suffer as a result of the deal. For this reason, committed turkey lovers such as myself might find themselves disengaged, and disenchanted with this particular offering.

It’s not bad however, not bad by any means. The filling is plentiful and varied, which is exactly what you want. Personally though, i found the bacon to slightly overpower the stuffing, and the choice of granary bread seemed nothing short of ludicrous.

Overall- 3.7/5

Turkey to stuffing ratio- 4/5

Bread- 2/5. Granary? Why?

Scotts Pantry

The Christmas sandwich from Scott’s Pantry cost  £2.10 for a medium, which is a reasonable price considering it was huge. It contained the essentials; turkey, stuffing, cranberry, bacon, sausage…and then a hell of a lot of mayonnaise.

I mean, I could taste some sausage at times, although I think the bacon and turkey totally dissolved in the mayo. It’s not the worst Christmas bap I’ve ever eaten, but as my friend put it, ‘I like to bite my sandwich, not drink it’.

I was defeated by the sandwich after around six bites, so I cannot fathom who (other than maybe Alan Richman) could take on and survive a large.

Overall- 3/5

Turkey to stuffing ratio- Did you say mayo to mayo ratio?

Bread- 5/5. The bun was the size of my head.

The SU shop

As is everything with the SU and its cold food range, it was okay. Fine and average, but nothing to write home about.

There was sausage in it which is always a huge bonus in the festive sandwich business, and there are absolutely no qualms to be had here over the overall taste.

What is a deal breaker on the other hand, is the complete void of stuffing in the sandwich, despite being advertised on the packet. A festive sandwich without stuffing is just turkey and cranberry between two slices of bread. Abominable.

Turkey to stuffing ratio- 0/5. Non existent

Bread- 2/5. Weirdly bitty

Tesco

This sandwich was well and truly devoured. It could do with a bit of a mayo, but then again, you could say that about everything. Other than that it was top notch. It had all the necessary fillings in fairly good quantities, and the visual presentation alone is sublime.

The brown bread may prove problematic for some, but in this sandwich it really works.

At the end of the day, turkey is a very delicate flavour but no so elegant to eat. Be aware: both hands are needed for this.

Overall- 4.3/5

Turkey to stuffing ratio- 3/5. More stuffing needed.

Bread- 3/5. It could have been thicker and more robust.

Tampers

At £6, it’s the most expensive of the bunch, but served with roast potatoes and gravy that’s easily justified.

This turkey alternative is actually a festive beef sandwich infused with manna, apparently an edible substance God gives to people in the Bible. Exactly what we’re all craving of a lunchtime.

While it was good to see them shaking things up a bit, the lack of anything particularly festive in this festive sandwich meant it was actually more of a burger. If it is beef you’re looking for though, you won’t be disappointed.

Overall- 4/5

Turkey to stuffing ratio- N/A

Bread- 3/5. Great quality burger bun but not exactly festive

Greggs

Last but not least, a curve ball for all you pastry fans out there. Described as turkey, sage and onion stuffing and crispy bacon in a creamy sauce, this delicous offering melts in the mouth.

The tender turkey against the texture of the crispy bacon accentuates the eruption of festive delights in the mouth, while the creamy sauce washes it down.

After a mere six bites though the festive bake is over. Extremely tasty but not overly satisfying.

Sumptuous
