Fresher fury over unis failure to allocate accommodation

First-years agonise over housing crisis

Befuddled first-years voiced concerns about not having anywhere to live on the University of Sheffield Firmers 2014/2015 Facebook page.

Many said they hadn’t been contacted by the university following their applications.

It would seem that despite some confirming a place and requesting their preferred halls of residence students did not receive an acknowledgment from the university and consequently were not allocated anywhere to live.

“Livid”

In some circumstances students were told that their confirmations had not made it on to the system,  and they’d have to look for private accommodation elsewhere.

One applicant said: “They told me that I am not guaranteed accommodation as I have not yet returned the confirmation form to them, which I have actually done already”

Another wrote “It is the most stupid thing I have ever experienced and I am livid.”

Rob Stephens, Accommodation Office Manager at the University of Sheffield, said: “We understand that for many students, starting university means moving away from home for the first time and that’s why we’re committed to making the experience as smooth and as enjoyable as possible, so our students can concentrate on the start of their university lives.

Endcliffe- where many students won’t be living

“All students who applied for accommodation and met our accommodation guarantee were sent offers of university accommodation.

“Students who didn’t meet our guarantee were invited to house hunting events to help them find trusted accommodation in the private sector.”

Law student Silvi Sulvetti said otherwise. “We looked at the private flats ourselves, we had no help from them finding it.

We were pretty sad about it at first, but the rooms are bigger as there’s now just the two of us.”
