Liverpool Marathon Runs out of Steam

The route couldn’t be agreed on, so the whole thing has been cancelled. Mature.

The Liverpool Marathon has been cancelled after trouble occurred over changing the route.

Pier Head, where the marathon usually finishes, is no longer suitable for the organisers, who want the marathon to finish outside the city centre.

Road closures surrounding Pier Head cause too much disruption

They claim the existing route causes too much trouble for shoppers and traders, who suffer as a result of road closures.

The cancellation will affect 4,000 runners.

4,000 runners are left disappointed

Even after several meetings, organisers were unable to find a finish living up to the iconic Waterfront.

Liverpool Marathon director, Alan Rothwell, said: “It just wouldn’t seem right to have a marathon in the city and have it end anywhere other than the city centre waterfront. We could finish in Sefton Park or somewhere else but is that a true ‘Liverpool’ marathon?”
