Leicester students spend one-tenth the amount of their Lancastrian counterparts on make-up.

Leicester students spend an average of £135.55 on make-up each year, according to a study conducted by Escentual.

The average spend at Leicester is just over one-tenth of the money spent at Lancaster University. Students there spend an average of £1,109 on make-up, fragrances and skin care. That’s 20% of their annual £5,500 student loan or, 30% of the average £3,663.90 students at Leicester University pay for a Standard Twin size room in Oadby.

The whopping £1,109 spend means £370 was spent each term. That’s enough money to fund a week’s worth of food, almost 6 gallons of diesel or even a TFL weekly travelcard for travel within London zones 1-3.

Escentual’s study on student spending habits comes as new figures are released showing that undergraduates starting university this academic year will leave with debts of £53,000. A debt that will take half a lifetime to repay.

The top five was completed by York, UEA, Durham and Southhampton. All of which spent between £740 and £970 on average.

Escentual Chief Executive, Rakesh Aggarwal, said : “Gone are the days of student life meaning living ready meals and lying-in until past midday. Despite their reputation for being cash-strapped and lazy, more and more students nowadays are taking the initiative to find part-time work alongside their studies, so they have more funds to spend on little luxuries.”

But students at Leicester disagreed. Allie, a second year, told The Tab: “I can’t imagine spending that much money on makeup or beauty products, especially when you’re a student. They obviously can’t complain about their tuition fees.”

Another student, Christina, said: “It’s kind of sad if someone saves their money to buy fucking mascara instead of going out and being social or buying food for a decent meal.”
