Glasgow University Sports Clubs smash fundraising targets for NHS Charities

Glasgow Uni Sports Clubs are doing their bit

This month, some of Glasgow University’s finest sporting students recently challenged themselves during lockdown to raise money for NHS Charities. Four of GUSA’s clubs; Glasgow University Netball Club, Glasgow University Men’s Rugby and Women’s Rugby Clubs, and Glasgow University Men’s Hockey 1st XI, each decided to set a fundraising target whilst covering as much distance as possible. Each club set a different goal respectively and have received endless donations in order to raise money for such a worthy cause.

Below are the stories and journeys documented by members from all three clubs. A big shift and well done to everyone involved!

Glasgow University Netball Club (GUNC)

Glasgow University Netball Club aimed to raise £1500 for Glasgow Woman’s Aid over fifteen days by collectively running, walking or cycling 1500km. But this initial goal was surpassed super quickly so they upped the targets to 4500km and £2500!

A member of GUNC describes her experience during the challenge:

“It has been such a lovely project – to come together at this tough time and support one another! With the netball season ending early, it has been lovely to have something to keep us all connected. We’re really delighted to be able to donate to Women’s Aid, especially with the current spike of domestic abuse. Women supporting women has always been something we strive for!”

So far, the girls have raised over a whopping £3,420! To find out more, the donation page link is here:

Glasgow University Men’s and Women’s Rugby Club (GURFC) (GUWRFC)

Glasgow University Men’s Rugby Club have come together to run 1859km to raise funds for NHS Charities. Since the club is celebrating its 150th anniversary, the club thought it would be fitting to challenge themselves by collectively running certain distances in order to reach the target of 1869.

So far the team have raised over £500 for the NHS in the current fight against COVID-19. For any more donations the link can be found below:

The Glasgow University Women’s Rugby Football team (GUWRFC) as their big fundraiser this year have decided to Run/Walk/Cycle all their BUCS teams! They have surpassed their £500 fundraising target and all the donations will go to the Wooden Spoon charity. Since the global pandemic, many of their events have been suspended but the charity is still up and running and helping out more local community projects and charities that may be suffering by distributing funds to them. Glasgow University Men’s Hockey 1st XI (GUMHC)

The Men’s 1st Hockey team decided to do a relay between all of their houses across the UK and even as far as Munich! In total this amounted to around 2932km. Starting on the 4th of May, each member had to cycle or run as much as they could over ten days. Their initial target was £1,500 for NHS Charities but they have completely surpassed this target!

The team have raised over £2,370 for the NHS and the page is still open for any last-minute donations:
