There was a fire at Cavern last night

It went on for four hours

Firefighters were called to the scene just after 10pm after an accidental fire broke out. Crews got to work with breathing apparatus and jets after the alarm was sounded at 10:20pm, as first reported by the Exeter Express & Echo.

Police closed off Gandy Street and Queen Street as firefighters from Crediton, Exeter and Topsham tackled the fire that is believed to have started in the kitchen roof space of the underground building. City centre roads were cut off to traffic as the fighters tackled the blaze.

It resulted in a section being severely damaged, and it wasn’t until midnight that the smoke began to clear from Queen Street. By 2.08am, the fire was finally out after the fire crews cut away and dampened down the damage.

Thankfully, there were no casualties as the building was empty at the time and most of the damage has been confined to the kitchen area of the club. Our beloved Cavern survives on.
