Glenn Skinner, Exeter’s most-loved local beggar, recently protested to a court that state benefit cuts have left him with less than a fiver a day to live on.

The 42 year-old admitted to begging on Cathedral Green last Monday, when he approached a copper to ask for some change.

Skinner, who has been arrested three times in the past five months, explained that he had “no excuses”, but that he was finding life a struggle.

“Quite recently I have not had much money, if anything,” he said. “I have less than a £5 a day to live on.”

Incidentally, this is at the same time that a partnership with Devon and Cornwall Police launched its controversial anti-begging campaign.

The campaign argues that giving money to those on the streets are doing more harm than good, often funding alcohol or drug addictions.

Told that he could face imprisonment if he continues his begging ways, Glenn was fined £120.
