Scientists go sharking

It’s like shark week but in no way as exciting

A basking shark tracking project is to be extended by scientists for another year.

The project was founded by the University of Exeter and Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), aiming to find out more about the life cycle of basking sharks.

Sharks basking in all of the attention

Eight sharks were tagged off the west coast of Scotland in July last year, and since then the public has been able to follow their progress online. The project will be expanded, tagging another 29 sharks this summer to help plan for the sustainable management of the sea.

The results will help the Scottish Government decide whether to implement a Marine Protected Area to protect the basking sharks.
