A love letter to Cathays

It’s a bitter-sweet relationship

| UPDATED

We've all been there and hated Cathays at some point. Whether it was because of the amount of rubbish over the pavement or for how ridiculously loud it can get. At the end of the day, we wouldn't have it any other way.

Here are the top reasons why we all love Cathays.

The pubs

We all love a trip to the pub, but imagine having only one or two to go to. Cathays has plenty of pubs which means that we end up bickering about where to go for the weekly pub quiz trip. Along with The Woody, there is Gassys, The Vulcan, The Mackintosh, The Flora and many others which we all hold close in our hearts. We all have our favourite, but there is no denying that Cathays is home to some of the best pubs in Cardiff.

The chippies

Fam Fish is in Cathays. Is there anything else left to say? The chip and kebab shops in Cathays complete our nights out. You always end up having a lovely chat with the owner of the kebab shop and by the end of your second year, you'll know the staff by their first names. If you're really lucky, you might even end up on the Fam Fish wall of fame.

T&A, Chicago Bulls, Mamas or Khans. The list goes on.

The coffee shops

Roath may have the infamous Blanche Bakery, but Cathays has The Early Bird, Hoffi Coffi and many more. Every hangover needs a banging coffee and an even better brunch, and no place does that better than Stag Coffee. Stag is elite and sorts out every hangover.

The location

Living in Cathays means that the walk to uni everyday is at most 10 minutes with town only a half hour walk away. Students at unis across the UK have to get buses into uni and their city centre. We should thank our lucky stars that our money can go towards VKs and not bus passes.

Everyone in Cathays is also super close to each other. If your uni kitchen is really that bad, you can just leave and be at your mates house within five minutes.

It's not all ugly

Don't get me wrong, Cathays is an awful sight on bin day but the rest of the time, it isn't that bad.

Stand on the bridge and watch the sunset, it's a lush view.

Cathays is also home to Bute Park and we all know how beautiful that is. Even the roads of Cathays are a great backdrop for a cute Insta.

The rooftops

When it's sunny the first place everyone retreats to is the roof. Most of Cathays will be there catching rays when its barely 15 degrees. Everyone goes out and sits on their roof catching the 10 degrees sun rays.

The houses in Cathays also throw the best house parties. More often than not, your neighbours will also be students so no worries about noise complaints.

Cathays gets a lot of grief, but we all have that mate that lives in Roath. Cathays residents unite to tell them how crap Roath is compared to Cathays. We have Lidl.

Miss you Cathays, see you soon.
