Our vice-chancellor claimed a jammy £8000 in expenses last year

Alright for some

Vice-chancellor Janet Beer spent over £8000 on personal expenses last year — on top of a generous £253,000 salary.

Greedy Janet, 58, ranked in the top 20 for the largest amount claimed on expenses, receiving £8478 over the 2013-’14 academic year.

She also racked up hefty bills for £3814 on first class flights and £1152 on swanky hotels, say new stats.

The average spend on expenses by fat-cat VCs was £3112, according to a report compiled by the University and College Union.

Janet’s salary still pales in comparison to other uni bosses who trousered hundreds of thousands of pounds: VC of Nottingham Trent Neil Gorman earns £623,000 and claimed £11,484 on expenses.

University and College Union General Secretary Sally Hunt said: “Many staff and students will be amazed at the size of vice-chancellors’ salaries, and at the largesse displayed by some university leaders when it comes to first class flights, hotels and other expenses.

“That this is happening in public institutions which are largely funded by the taxpayer and students makes the lack of transparency and accountability surrounding senior pay and perks a national scandal.”
