We asked people whether the Midlands actually even exists

‘Yes, but only at Christmas’

While none of us are happy to admit the problem in the central area of Britain, there are a growing faction of people who believe the Midlands is in fact a place.

As the majority of people who study here are from Birmingham, Manchester and the Black Country, we took to the streets of Aber to ask whether anyone thought the Midlands really existed.

Emily Groves, second year, Marine Biology

“What even are the Midlands? Is it like the Prairie?”

Lottie Birch, second year, Geography

“Yes, definitely, we’re the best part of the country between the North and the South.”

Luis Gjoni, second year, Film & TV

“Of course it exists, it’s just that poncey Southeners only care about London and below. To be honest the South just can’t get their pompous heads out their arses.”

Rowan Pocock, Masters, Physics

“The Midlands are just a myth created by those too ashamed to be from the North.”

Phil Dudeck, third year, Business Studies

“Anywhere above Swindon is the North.”

Alfrey Bearfoot, first year, Zoology

“The South has an identity, as does the North, but the Midlands doesn’t really have much more than an accent… I suppose it probably does exist though.”

Nichola Powell, graduate, Law

“Yes, but only at Christmas because I like the German Market in Birmingham.”

Jack Spittle, second year, Film & TV

“Yes, of course it does, just look at a map.”
