Influencer’s ex-father-in-law arrested a year after she was assassinated during viral livestream

He’s been connected to a second murder as well

Last year, beauty influencer Valeria Márquez was killed in an apparent hit during a livestream in Zapopan, Mexico.

The influencer, who boasted 105k followers on TikTok, was on a livestream when she was killed. People watching it initially believed it to be a prank, with concerning details emerging about some kind of delivery.

“I was doing some things today, and Erika called me and said, ‘Hey, babe, they’re bringing you something, and I don’t know what, but they want to give it to you,” Valeria said during the livestream. “I said, ‘Oh, I’ll be there in about an hour,’ and the delivery guy said, ‘I’d better wait for her because it’s really expensive.’”

Someone then entered the beauty salon where Valeria was working, and viewers heard “Hi, are you Valeria?” just moments before she was shot three times.

“According to the initial investigation, she was in her establishment when a man entered and apparently shot her several times with a firearm, killing her,” the prosecutor’s office said at the time.

The motive behind the killing was not made public, but the Jalisco Prosecutor’s Office theorised it was a cartel hit of some kind.

“The aggressor arrived asking if the victim (Márquez) was there. So it appears he didn’t know her,” Denis Rodriguez said. “With that, you can deduce — without jumping to conclusions — that this was a person who was paid. It was obviously someone who came with a purpose.”

At a memorial after her death, a potential suspect left a bouquet of roses outside her workplace with a note reading “sorry”.

On July 30, over a year after Valeria Márquez’s killing, Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala (R1) was arrested in connection with the case. He’s a highranking member of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

At a press conference after the arrest, Mexico’s secretary of security and citizen protection alleged that Valeria had been dating the gangster’s son. Upon breaking up, Ramón allegedly ordered the hit at his son’s request.

“The son of R1 had a romantic relationship with Valeria [Márquez], he had threatened her on several occasions, and everything indicates — and this will be proven — that the son asked his father, R1, to commit the femicide,” he said.

At the same time, police believe that R1 was also connected to the brutal killing of Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan, in November 2025. He’s currently being held in the maximum security facility Altiplano, but has yet to be formally charged.

Ramón’s son and a third individual believed to be the gunman are still at large.
