How many plane crashes have there been so far in 2025?

On 12th June, an India Air plane crashed into a medical college in Ahmedabad, western India. At least 200 people have sadly died. Quite a few planes have tragically crashed in 2025. So, how many plane crashes have there been so far in 2025? And is the number unusually high?

How many plane crashes have there been in 2025?

The Flight Safety Foundation’s Aviation Safety Network runs a database of all safety incidents involving airliners carrying at least 12 passengers, military transport category aircraft and corporate jets.

According to this database, there have been 61 occurrences so far in 2025, and 397 fatalities. The majority of these fatalities are the people who sadly died in the India Air plane crash.

Most of these incidents didn’t involve commercial passenger planes. These figures include smaller private planes. The database also records accidents which didn’t actually happen on the aircraft, such as when a person trespasses on a runway.

Three big aircraft crashes occurred in the last few days of January 2025. A plane crashed shortly after takeoff in South Sudan on 29th January. One person survived. An American Airlines passenger plane and a military helicopter collided into each other over the Potomac River in Washington DC. A medical evacuation flight crashed in Philadelphia. The six people on board died. The plane hit lots of buildings, causing fires which killed two more people.

On 6th February, ten people on a flight near the coast of Alaska died. A Delta plane crashed upon landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport, caught fire and flipped over. Everybody survived.

When a plane crashed into the Caribbean Sea on 17th March, 13 out of 18 people on board died. A helicopter crashed into the Hudson River on 10th April, killing a family of five and the pilot. A flight over Belize was highjacked on 17th April.

On 8th June, a small plane fell down near San Diego, and all six people on board died. Another six people were killed when a plane crashed into a quiet neighbourhood in San Diego. At least eight others were injured.

Do more planes crash now than before?

There hasn’t been an unusual amount of plane crashes in 2025. According to the Aviation Safety Network database, there were 207 incidents in 2024, with 405 fatalities. In 2023, there were 214 occurrences in which 178 people died. 2022 saw 219 occurrences and 292 fatalities. So, the number of accidents in 2025 so far is in keeping with the statistics from previous years. Although, the number of fatalities in 2025 is sadly much higher than in recent years, due to the tragic Air India plane crash on 12th June.

There have actually been far less occurrences so far in 2025 than there were a decade ago.  In 2015, there were 260 incidents and 811 fatalities.
