Here’s what it was like on the crashed Delta plane, from the survivors who were on board
‘I thought: I’m not getting off this plane’
This week, the world has looked on horrified as it witnessed a Delta plane crash land in Toronto – flipping over in the process. Miraculously, not one casualty was reported – but for those on board the aircraft you can only imagine how terrifying the experience must have been for passengers. In what was described by one passenger as a typical flight between Minneapolis to Toronto, things quickly went bad and the footage of the plane crash landing and flipping over is truly harrowing to watch. The passengers who were on board the Delta flight as it crash landed in Toronto have now been sharing their stories of what it was like to be on that plane, and now become survivors of what could have been a huge loss to life.
‘We could smell jet fuel’
John Nelson, one of the survivors, spoke to CNN about the flight. “We were coming in and I did notice the winds were super gusty. The snow had blown over the runways. It was routine, but it was noticeable that the runways were in a weird condition. When we hit, it was a super hard hit. The plane went sideways, and I believe we skidded on our side and then flipped over on our back. There was a big fireball out of the left side of the plane.
“When we finished, I was upside down, everybody else there was as well. Thankfully everybody was okay. We tried to get out of there as quickly as possible.”

Speaking about the panic after they came to a halt, Nelson explained how everyone was hanging upside down and they unbuckled themselves to fall to the ceiling of the plane. “Everybody was like, ‘get out, get out, get out’. We could smell jet fuel and even now I smell of jet fuel.
“It’s amazing that we’re still here.”

‘No one died – grateful for that and my own life’
Pete Koukov, another survivor, spoke to CBC and said he was doing okay in crazy circumstances. “I didn’t seem to think anything seems off. There was no warning that anything was off, either, so to my knowledge going in I thought we were just about to land and everything was gonna be completely fine. It wasn’t until the wheels hit the ground that anything was off.
“I didn’t wanna be on the plane, but there was a minute or two of waiting for instruction. I was one of the last people to get off the plane. I just wanted to get off, thankfully the flight crew did an amazing job. As did everyone on board.”
One survivor with an injury spoke about it just six hours after surviving
Pete Carlson, another one of the Delta plane crash survivors, spoke to CBC National and explained his experience. “There had been comments early on in the flight about strong winds. It was a very forceful event where everything went sideways. The initial feeling was just ‘need to get out of this.’ I took my seatbelt off, and as I took it off I crashed down onto the ceiling which had become the floor because we were upside down.
Point out his injury, Carlson says “I’m a little balder than I was this evening. I’m okay. Not sure when it happened. A very human component switched on when we could smell gas and liquid was pouring over the windows.
“I thought: I’m not getting off this plane.”
