Local police in the city of Ahmedabad have released a statement after the Air India plane crash, revealing there is only one known survivor.

The London-bound plane carrying 242 people crashed into an accommodation used by doctors shortly after take-off with 53 British nationals on board.

In a statement to ANI, police commissioner G.S. Malik said: “The police found one survivor in seat 11A. One survivor has been found in the hospital and is under treatment.”

“Cannot say anything about the number of deaths yet. The death toll may increase as the flight crashed in a residential area,” he continued.

The survivor’s name has been revealed to be Ramesh Vishwakumar, but no further details have been released at this time.

It comes after he told the Associated Press earlier today: “It appears there are no survivors in the plane crash.”

He said that “some locals would have also died” due to the place where it crashed but “exact figures on casualties are being ascertained”.

“Of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals. The injured are being taken to the nearest hospitals.”

Gatwick Airport, where the flight was due to land at 18:25 BST, also shared a similar statement on X revealing information about the crash.

They shared that two hotlines have been set up in the UK and India and said: “Our thoughts are with family and friends of those on board.”
