All we know so far about who was on board the American Airlines plane and the helicopter

The US Figure Skating governing body confirmed several members were aboard


A search and rescue operation is currently underway after an American Airlines passenger plane and a military helicopter crashed into each other over the Potomac River in Washington DC. The American Airlines flight had 64 people on board, and the military Black Hawk helicopter had three members of the US army inside the chopper. Currently 18 bodies have been recovered from the river, and all 67 people involved in the collision are feared to have last their lives. Here’s what we know so far about who was on board the American Airlines plane and the helicopter as details of the tragic crash emerge.

US Figure Skating

The flight was going from Wichita, Kansas to Washington DC – with the crash between the American Airlines plane and the military helicopter occurring mid air. Some of the first details we learned about who was involved in the crash informed that the US Figure skating governing body had several members of America’s skating community on board.

Several coaches and youth skaters are amongst those on the flight. They were part of the National Development Team.

Team USA pair skater Luke Wang and ice dancer Ethan Peal commented on the crash.“Praying for all those on the flight from Wichita to DC,” Wang posted on X, adding that “among the passengers were skaters and coaches. absolutely heartbreaking.”

Ethan Peal said “I am in shock. Praying for families and my skating community.”

The helicopter

It has been confirmed that the three people aboard the US military helicopter were soldiers, and what we know so far is they were not senior Army officials according to authorities.

Recovery and rescue is set to continue for days

American Airlines has said in a statement that it is calling out for families of those who could be potentially on board, and affected by the crash. American Airlines said in a statement: “If you believe you may have loved ones on board Flight 5342, call American Airlines toll-free at 800-679-8215. Those calling from outside the U.S. can visit news.aa.com for additional phone numbers. Family members in Canada, Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands can call 800-679-8215 directly.”

Regarding survivors, the Washington DC Fire chief said “We don’t know yet, but we are working on it.”

Over a dozen bodies have been recovered. Kansas senator Roger Marshall says “we probably lost 60 Kansans tonight”.
