Meet the Players: ‘We guarantee to get you wet every weekend and of course our dedication to the big O’

You’ve heard from the boys, now it’s the girls teams…

| UPDATED

With the new term about to begin and the sporting teams lumbering up for the all important Varsity series, The Tab have interrogated the biggest names in ladies sports to find out why you should be joining them this year.

Madga Marzee – Volleyball

Why are we the best team at uni?

We are like a family. We are not only competitive and hard working team but we also genuinely love what we do.  You can see that in every single member of our team. We work as a TEAM, we don’t exclude anyone!

What’s the most memorable moment from this season/tour?

The most memorable moment from last season for me would be the awards night when we all came together and celebrated our hard work. We had so much fun! It was so nice to reflect on the amazing year that we had.

Who should we look out for in your team?

Miriam Bakali. She is an incredible team mate that is always ready to help.  Her passion for volleyball just hits everyone. When she is on court – spirit is with us and we automatically just do better as a team. She can keep us focused and determined. She is a great inspiration for me and others.

Heather May Eakin -Wakeboarding

What makes you the best team at uni?

We’re one only of the only clubs who can guarantee to get you wet every weekend and of course our dedication to the big O… as in Ocean! But seriously, it doesn’t matter what your experience is or if you even have any at all, we’re a little club so you won’t miss out because you’re in the third team.

What is the funniest or memorable moment from last season/tour?

The funniest moment was the night one of our girls brought a guy back to the hotel room then turned away for 5 seconds and he disappeared, we all thought he’d jumped out the window, only to find him passed out underneath her bed in the morning. Scared the hell out of us!

Who is the one to look out for in your club and why?

Topless Toby, for his absolute dedication to face planting and wearing minimal clothing.

Rachel Ryan – Tennis

Why are you the best team?

We’re the best team because we all encourage each other and support each other at training and during matches. We’re all good friends and have a good time every week on our social.

What’s the funniest moment from last season/tour?

Funniest moment was on the way back from one of our matches when Annabelle made the driver take a huge detour because she thought she was gonna wet herself.

Who is the one to look out for on your team?
George is the one to watch for good reasons as he’s a great tennis player, supportive of all players and fun to be around.

Harriet Clarke – Football

Why are you the best team?

Best team because it’s always a giggle with plenty of singing and we love to get BOOOZEEYY

What’s the funniest moment from last season/tour?

Kelly Sutton aka Slutton on tour being so drunk she couldn’t even formulate words and thinking she was in funky fresh at dinner

Who is the one to look out for on your team?

Kimberly aka Fingerly.. A really quiet and reserved member who rarely displays her feelings over Facebook and always acts her age.. NOT.

Elizabeth Ball – Burlesque

Why are you the best team?

Our main goal is that everyone has fun and can build on their confidence. When we started we had to fight to be granted uni team status and we’re battling the stigma and prejudice surrounding burlesque whilst giving girls a hilariously fun and relaxed club environment.

Whats the funniest or most memorable moment from last season/tour?

One of our funniest tour memories is when one of our girls completely lost our hotel and ended up waking up in the bath of another sports team with no corset, shoes, make-up, drink tokens or money having no recollection of  anything. She then found her way back to our hotel in someone’s tour top to find she had also lost her card key!
Who should we look out for in your team?

Brogan Lees-Collier choreographed and taught an entire routine nearly single handedly as well creating costumes for our girls last year.

Natalie Kennedy – Women’s Rugby

Why are you the best team?

Womens rugby is the best team as we not only achieve amazing things but have fun whilst doing it! This year we won many awards as well as getting a 2nd team into BUCS.  The club is full of mixed abilities, whether you’ve been a rugby player all your life or never even touched a rugby ball, TWR offers something for everyone.

What’s the funniest or most memorable moment from last season/tour?

One of my funniest memories from last season was actually a fitness session with some of the 2nd team girls. We ended it by blasting really cheesy music and dancing around like fools.

Who should we look out for in your club?

Nayo Akinyele and Daisy Perris. Both girls are brilliant players with great speed, tactics and bundles of enthusiasm. But on a night out with them it is a laugh a minute.

Isabella Cawthorne – Trent Tiger cheerleading

What makes you the best team at uni?
We train hard, we go out lots, we have a huge variety of personalities and abilities, we welcome everyone, we entertain thousands of people at varsities, we’re national champions and next year we have won a bid to are go to the USA to represent the UK at an international competition!

What is the funniest or memorable moment from last tour/season?

On tour our freshers wore their corn rows, bald caps, monobrows and moustaches with pride!

Who is the one to look out for in your club and why?

There are too many to mention but I’d like to give all the flyers a special mention because being thrown in the air (especially if you aren’t from a gymnastic background) is a really scary thing to do!

Georgia Adderley – Women’s Hockey

What makes us the best team?
We’re committed to hockey, but also know how to party and rarely miss a Wednesday night at Ocean. We have lots of events including ‘Tour-de-Notts’, which is a bar crawl racing between bars on scooters!  We’re really looking forward to welcoming our new freshers for 2014.

Most memorable moment from last season?

It has to be Rose Hammond on tour. She not only got a real tattoo of a unicorn, but also, knowing she was allergic to black henna, decided to get one of our fresher’s names tattooed on her forehead in black henna! Then Rose had an extreme allergic reaction to the henna. Her face blew up like a balloon. Upon our arrival home she was quickly taken to A&E!

Who to look out for?

Katy Hart, because she’s not only a great hockey player, but she’s also a really friendly bubbly person who isn’t afraid to show everyone what she’s made of on a Wednesday night. And according to her captain Alex, she’s a predator..

Tracey Lamb – Rowing

What makes you the best team at uni?

It has to be the closeness of our squad – when you’re in a boat on the middle of the river with the rest of your crew, you have to work together even when things may be going wrong! My friends for life are definitely those I have met through rowing.

What is the funniest or memorable moment from last season/tour?
Women’s Henley Regatta. The whole squad travelled down to Henley on Thames and competed against the best uni crews in the country. Then when we were knocked out we enjoyed the camping weekend by drinking Pimms on the riverbank, toasting marshmallows over a camp fire and just having a generally great time to finish off our rowing year!

Who is the one to look out for in your club and why?
This is a tough one but I would say Rachel Sharp as I don’t think I have ever met someone so determined!
