Police say knife crime is on the decrease after string of recent attacks

There has been five knife attacks in just six days


Chief Superintendent David Hartley has told the public that knife crime is on the decrease in light of the recent string of attacks. There has been five attacks around Sheffield in the past six days.

He said: “The latest figures for the force show that knife crime as a whole has fallen over a 12 month period from 2013/14 to 2014/15.

“The data also shows fall in the number of knife crimes recorded for Sheffield across the same period.

“Knife crime remains an absolute priority for South Yorkshire Police and we will continue to target those people who choose to arm themselves with such weapons in order to ensure that South Yorkshire can remain a safe place to live.

“The relentless and targeted work carried out by our officers means that we are successfully identifying those who are carrying knives and other items in Sheffield and are seizing them immediately.”

Police have stressed that they believe recent attacks to be ‘targeted attacks’.

Recent attacks include Leigh-Anne Mahachi, aged 22, who died of stab woulds on April 12th in her Gleadless Valley home.

Police office PC Lisa Bates who was attacked on duty with an axe last Wednesday.

A 19-year-old man who was stabbed the following day outside a block of flats in Sharrow.

A 29-year-old man who was stabbed on Saturday Morning on Manor Park Way.

And the 19-year old man who was stabbed on Pomona Street, just off Ecclesall Road on Sunday evening. He managed to get to Champs Bar on Ecclesall Road and received help from staff.
