We asked Sheffield, can long distance relationships work?

‘I was living in Crookes and going out with someone in Broomhill. Impossible.’

With V-Day still ringing in our ears, we asked you whether long distance relationships ever actually work, or are simply doomed from the start.

Francesco Maria Fabrizi, first year, Mechanical Engineering

“No, not really. Love is physical, and isn’t just a feeling.”

Ellie, second year, Biology and French

“Two of my flatmates are actually in long distance relationships. One of them sees her boyfriend every few weeks, and the other one sees her boyfriend every week. I think seeing each other too often could be bad as you can become too dependent on the other person.”

Mary, fourth year, Law

“I think they can work, but there has to be a lot of trust in the relationship, and it’s also really difficult. I just got out of a long distance relationship after being cheated on, and also people can get bored.”

Alice, third year, Maths

“Long distance for a long time doesn’t work. You don’t see each other, obviously, and it’s hard being in a relationship even when you see each other all the time!”

Joe and Bobby, third year, Biology

Joe: “They’re alright, I guess. I suppose they’re quite hard to maintain and a lot of people do break up at uni. I don’t really have that much experience to be honest…”

Bobby: “Long distance is really hard work. I was living in Crookes and going out with someone in Broomhill. Impossible.

Clement, third year, Politics

“Honestly, it will never work. Long distance relationships aren’t what relationships should be like. Also, I don’t see what a girl who lives a long way a way can bring to me what I can’t bring to myself.”
