The most drastic course changes

Why suffer doing something you hate?

At university, some of the biggest choices you’ll ever have to make normally involve what to drink and where to go out.

These 5 students made the call to sack off that gave them nothing but pain, and get to grips with something different.

Risky move or right choice?

1.Andy – Electrical Engineering to Languages at Sheffield Hallam

Top of our list of weird course changes is Andy.

Andy had an A-level in maths and naturally was pushed towards an engineering degree at school.

“Basically I hated it and I knew that doing that degree any longer would never make me happy.

It took me a few years of not liking it to sit down and think about what I really wanted to do.”

Two years later and with a decision most Uni-Of kids wouldn’t dream of, he put intellectual snobbery aside and dropped out to do Languages at the cross-city nemesis, Hallam.

Have you used the loos in this building lately...?

Andy’s new home, bonne chance

2.Will – Architecture to Computer Science.

Next up is bright-eyed Will who came to Sheffield with his pencils, Macbook, and a head full of architecture dreams.

A creative man with a larger-than-average fringe and a love for drawing, his first-year of Architecture did not go as planned:

“By the end of the first month, I knew I didn’t want to be an Architect. I didn’t think I was getting anything out of it considering how many all-nighters I had to pull”.

Will’s emotional scars were evident but fortunately he was able to make a complete U-turn and switch to Computer Science.

“I was never offered the chance at school to study computing but I went for it and it was probably the best choice I’ve made since spending my entire student loan on Apple hardware”.

Do you even compute?

3.George – Chemistry to Economics

Like many, George thought that choosing his favourite A-Level to study for a degree would be a good idea. He was wrong.

He found the lectures boring, the lecturers unhelpful and by the end of the year had called it quits. The course change to Economics had been confirmed and he decided to sack off the last few meaningless exams.

“After graduation I’d always set my eyes on the finance sector. Naturally economics came to mind”

Because you don’t find scientists on Wall Street

4. Daisy – English to Geography

Daisy started last year as a student of English but she quickly changed to Geography, swapping the parchment for the felt tips in what might be perceived as too bold a move.

“I reasoned I’d be likely to work harder at things that involved colouring in than I would at being forced to read books. I also wanted to be doing my own writing and not just reading someone else’s’”.

No regrets

5. Steve  – Computer Science (ITMB) to Law

“I couldn’t see myself programming for a living” – were the words of Ben, who last week changed to study law.

A guy who was more often seen skanking out at Corp than he was coding some Java, Ben was enrolled on the Computer Science (ITMB) course.

For Ben this was a change born of disinterest and a desire for something more rewarding than sitting in Lewin Lab with his eyes glued to a screen.

Because studying law is ‘the easy option’
