Meet The Captains

It’s nearly Christmas and do we really know our sports captains? If you don’t, you should get to know your sporting leaders better.

We’re now into the new season with another dramatic year of sport ahead of us. We find out who’s leading us to victory – here’s an insight into the brilliant minds of our captains.

Football – Christian Needham and Kamran Vahabi

Position?

Centre back/ Centre Midfield

What makes you the best sports team at Uni?

We are the biggest club at university and all six teams have been strengthened this season. Football is the world’s most watched, played and supported sport – self-explanatory really why football is the best at university.

What is the funniest or memorable moment from last season/tour? 

Thrashing our nearest title contenders in the last game of the season by playing sublime and free flowing football. The performance was topped off as our captain of last year got recklessly punched by an ever-frustrated opponent much to the amusement of our team.

Who is the one to look out for in your club (and why)?

Bilal Khan, first team keeper, is the one to look out for. A big character in the dressing room who provides consistent performances week in week out. He has been a great ambassador for the club in the 3 years he’s played at Holloway and has some outrageous dance moves.

Rugby – Dom Matthews

Position?

Utility Back, predominantly scrum-half or wing.

What makes you the best sports team at uni?

The camaraderie in going out and playing with 21 of your mates on a Wednesday winning the match and then celebrating in style.

What is the funniest or memorable moment from last season/tour?

The old adage of what goes on tour stays on tour, however it can be said that the Ios tour will live long in the memory of all that went and also for the people of Ios! On a personal note playing at Twickenham and winning a national cup is definitely up there.

Who is the one to look out for in your club (and why)?

Playing ability wise Redha Guedroudj played to very high standard with Scotland age groups and brings that experience to the team. On the social side I’d say Sam Mahoney and Tom Baldwin this years social secretaries, they will always be seen in some outrageous costume cutting some shapes in the Union. A sight to behold!

What makes you the best sports team at uni?

The Tom Cats are a National Champion team in both dance and cheer in previous years and have a team going to Worlds this year. We are also one of the largest teams on campus where we have both competitive and non-competitive.

What is the funniest or memorable moment from last season/tour?

Most memorable moment this coming season for me is watching the new All Girl stunt team progress in training. This is a new team that was created this year where both flyers had never cheered before and they have all made such incredible improvements.

Who is the one to look out for in your club (and why)?

I feel like both the All Girl and the Co-ed team are to watch out for, the Girls in All Girl have achieved an incredible amount this year and the huge amount of boys that have joined Co-ed have made this year’s team such a high standard and they’re doing even harder stunts than in previous years.

What makes you the best sports team at uni?

We are all so close as a club, as we give 100 percent in everything we do. Word on the grapevine is that we’re known as the fittest team on campus! Interpret that any way you like!

What is the funniest or memorable moment from last season/tour?

Match against Chichester – we were losing the whole way through by only around 5 goals, and we all gave it 100 percent, and we ended up winning after a neck and neck final quarter! Being promoted in both our leagues was also a huge highlight!

Who is the one to look out for in your club (and why)?

We have a few rising starlets this year! I can’t pick just one out. But this year the firsts have 3 freshers that have all made an amazing contribution to this season already!

A defensive midfielder

What makes you the best sports team at uni? 

The game makes us the best, it’s thrilling, rough and a laugh. Plus the guys have a real spirit to keep pushing on through hard games and keep the physicality alive.

What is the funniest or memorable moment from last season/tour?

Last season we had a teammate who has unfortunately left but he managed to knock out a member of the opposition in one clean hit. The guy was out before he hit the ground. That was our first BUCS win of the season.

Who is the one to look out for in your club (and why)? 

Our team does not really have a stand out player but our main goal scorer Chase is definitely one who an audience will want to watch. His speed allows him to pass the best of players with ease, giving him great scoring opportunities that will wow an audience.
