UCL Tories finally apologise after racist bullying allegations

The society says sorry two weeks after union delivers verdict

UCL Conservatives have finally apologised to members complaining of a ‘toxic’ and discriminatory atmosphere at society meetings.

Three members, two of them Jewish and another Indian, complained of racist bullying, Islamophobia and anti-Semitism from senior society officials.

Following this summer’s internal inquiry, UCLU handed the Tories a formal warning and told them to apologise to each complainant in writing.

However, Union officials deemed the Tory’s first draft apology inadequate because it did not including individual names of complainants.

Union officials have declined to comment on the investigation.

Two weeks after the verdict was delivered, complainants have finally received an apology from the society with a decidedly noncommittal letter.

“Dear X

Following on from the summary disciplinary hearing process at UCLU, we at UCLU Conservative Society are satisfied with the findings of the disciplinary panel.

We are reaching out to you to apologise for any upset caused or any misinterpretation of the actions or intentions of UCLU Conservative Society.

In agreement with the UCLU disciplinary panel, we strongly refute the presence of bullying, harassment or exclusionary behaviour within our society – and we are satisfied that the investigation by UCLU also concluded this.

However, the UCLU Conservative Society is passionate about running an inclusive and welcoming society. This is why we are happy to work with UCLU Society Development to ensure the best possible experience for members of our society.

We hope you will join us at future events so that we can together enjoy the excellent year we have planned.

Kind Regards,

UCLU Conservative Society”

The Conservative society has been told to work with the union, although this letter should draw a line under the affair.

The complainants have each received a copy.
