Do you care staff are boycotting marking?

We asked you how you feel about the latest round of strikes

| UPDATED boycott guild marking boycott strikes students sydney jones UCU

Members of the UCU are boycotting marking and setting coursework in protest over their pension cuts.

The strike started this week across the country – with union members refusing to mark assessed work until the dispute is resolved.

With students being dragged into the conflict, we took to campus to find out how you feel about the latest industrial action to effect the university.

Accounting and Finance student Joe disagrees with the action taken by UCU members.

Joe, pictured here with his friend, said: “It is so unfair on students. We pay for our work to be marked. They should find other ways of protesting that don’t punish us.”

Tom, first year Chemistry student, is not convinced the boycott will have any impact.

He said: “They are perfectly in their right to stage the protest, but I honestly don’t think it’ll have any impact.

“The decision has been made and I don’t see it being changed.”

Craig and Leah, third year Politics students, sympathise with the staff.

Leah said: “Of course a boycott is a bit of an inconvenience but they have a pretty good point, don’t they?”

Craig agrees: “I absolutely support it. They’ve got to do what they’ve got to do – they have every right.”

Chloe and Danielle weren’t quite as forgiving.

English student Chloe said: “To be honest students definitely shouldn’t suffer for the fault of the government.”

Danielle, Chemistry student, was quick to add: “We pay for stuff to get marked. It takes a long enough amount of time anyway.”

Of course not everyone will be effected by the boycott.

Medic Andy really isn’t bothered by what is going on: “I really don’t care. I have no opinion on the matter.

“I don’t have any work to be marked so it really doesn’t bother me.”
