THURSDAY Sound City Highlights

Read on for The Tab’s Top Three

1)      NOAH AND THE WHALE @ The Anglican Cathedral

As far as venues go, the cathedral is difficult to beat. Haunting, hollow and atmospheric, there is no better place to pick up the violins and drumbeat of Noah and the Whale. Aside from the many thousand couples stood in the crowd (that is possibly a slight exaggeration, granted) almost turning it into a wedding party, it was a joy to watch. And they also said it was better playing here than Manchester Cathedral. That always bodes well with the Liverpool population.

Highlight has to be singing along to ‘L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N’, that well-loved tune that everyone always messes up by getting the letters wrong. Except the professionals on the stage, of course.

2)      JETTA @ Duke Street Garage

A shocking frizz of ginger hair, the lead singer of this band is force to be beheld, but in a positive sort of way. They really do seem to be one of the ones to watch. Their songs are catchy, feelgood and easy to learn. What more could you want?

3)      BASTILLE @ Duke Street Garage

There are no words. But let’s try.

Bastille were absolutely phenomenal. Dan, the lead singer who had been wandering the streets of Liverpool all day and pleasantly surprising fans he happened to come across, claimed that they had been worrying that no one would show up because of their late 1.30am slot. How very, very wrong they were.

The obvious song ‘Flaws’ certainly did not disappoint, and throwing a few covers in there, they delighted the crowd with their own version of ‘What Would You Do?’ by City High, which was surprising. The best of the lot had to be ‘Pompeii’ however, which they finished on. The whole crowd sang so loud and jumped up and down so much that the atmosphere was euphoric. That’s right, euphoric.
