Student Politics takes a back seat to… Nachos?

Facebook page set up to take on the issue you really care about

Scientists have recently proven the only thing pettier than politics is, in fact, student politics (well, they may have?). Here in Edinburgh, the students we elected to get us cheaper drinks at Potterow have instead decided to spend their time wanking over their own self-image, in the form of the EUSA Emergency General Meeting.

We were hoping for more from the photographer

However, while hundreds lined up for a spot in George Square Theatre (far more than for any lecture) to hear the ‘Are You Happy With EUSA’ debate, hundreds also rose to support an equally, if not FAR more important issue: the nachos in Teviot.

The Facebook Page ‘Are You Happy With the nachos in Teviot’ apparently struck a chord with many students. The page takes on the big issues: wait time, soggy nachos, vegetarian options, and belies the fact that no one really cares about student politicians.

Started only a few days before the debate, the page gained almost 300 likes, the same number it would have taken to pass the proposed EGM motions. Easily more entertaining than anything said in the debate, the page provided valuable insights into the whole ordeal and made the important connections which our officials seemed incapable of making.

The Tab asked the page’s creator: ‘why nachos?’. He claimed more people eat in Teviot than are affected by the issues discussed at the EGM. As nachos are one of their most popular dishes, it’s now more important than ever to ensure their quality. Apparently “it’s nachos all the way.”

So what have we learned? Next time you find yourself enjoying a delicious bowl of nachos in Teviot, just remember the people who fought and died to make that happen….NOT your elected student officials.
