Scottish student feared dead after falling overboard from a North Sea cruise ship

Liam Jones was on a seven-day cruise with family for his mum’s birthday

A 23-year old social work student from Dundee is feared dead after falling overboard from a cruise ship in the North Sea.

Liam Jones was aboard the MSC Euribia, a seven-day Northern European cruise in celebration of his mum’s birthday, when he went missing en-route to Hamburg, the Telegraph reports.

The Dundee student was last seen onboard by his sister on 16th March, shortly after sending his wife a message letting her know he felt sea sick.

MSC Cruises confirmed a passenger went missing during the cruise, prompting an investigation by Hampshire Constabulary upon the ship’s return to the Southampton following the incident.

Jones’ wife Sophia McPhee, 20, said: “He’s just… gone. I’m never going to see him again. I’m devastated. I have so many questions, and I’m not getting any answers to what’s happened.”

McPhee received a text message from Jones’ sister to say there had been an accident on board last Sunday: “She said there had been an accident and Liam ‘wasn’t coming back’.

“She then said she had seen CCTV and he’d gone overboard. I’ve not had any contact from anyone since.”

McPhee claims she had a difficult time contacting MSC Cruises regarding the incident to which MSC Cruises claimed to “refrain from disclosing any additional information” to the public out of respect for the family’s privacy.

A spokesperson for MSC Cruises said: “A passenger on board MSC Euribia went overboard on 16 March as the ship was sailing to Hamburg. This was reported to the authorities. The police in Southampton boarded the vessel today and investigated on behalf of the coroner.

We are deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts are with the family at this very difficult time. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we will refrain from disclosing any additional information.”
