Mica Miller’s sister speaks out, revealing the gutting reason her family did not intervene

Mica Miller’s younger sister, Abigail Francis, has spoken out after Death of the Pastor’s Wife, sharing insight into the singer’s final few months of life. 

As told through the Netflix documentary, Mica Miller experienced years of coercive control at the hands of Myrtle Beach pastor JP Miller, whom she married after an affair. Though she did attempt to leave him several times, it never stuck. When she did finally manage to serve him divorce papers, Mica died just a few days later from what the medical examiner described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head – a fact her family has continued to dispute. 

In a new interview with FITSNews, Abigail opened up about Mica’s death and the effect it had on her family. 

“If I talk too much about it,” she said, tearing up. “It’s just mind-blowing to understand that this is even real like when I got the call I was like, ‘Is is this real?’ Why? What is even happening?”

Elsewhere in the interview, she discussed Mica’s Law, which sadly failed to pass. It would have criminalised coercive control and widened the definition of domestic abuse. 

Even now, years after Mica’s tragic death, her family are still grappling with the grief. But they’re using it to propel them towards ventures close to Mica’s heart, whilst also working with people who might find themselves in similar situations to her.

Throughout much of Death of the Pastor’s Wife, Mica found refuge with various family members and friends when she was going through a particularly rough time with JP Miller. Still, not once did we see the family step in between the married couple – but there was a reason for that.

In the interview, Abigail admitted that she frequently gets asked why they did nothing. The answer was quite simple: They didn’t know the full extent of JP’s schemes and plots. 

“She didn’t call me, I had no idea,” Abigail, who is the baby of the family, said. “She, to my understanding, she just didn’t want us to know what was going on. Especially on that, ‘You’re my little sibling, and I don’t want you to know everything that I’m going through.'”

At some point, Mica explained to Abigaul that she was under “duress” and unable to share the full scope of what was going on. 

Abigail also noted how Mica’s faith got in the way. She didn’t want to share her pain, when every person has their own stuff to deal with. 

“She didn’t want to out anybody else’s sins because that’s, as a Christian, you’re not supposed to do that. You’re not supposed to throw stones; you’re not supposed to tell anybody like, ‘Hey, they did me wrong.'”
