A key witness in the Mica Miller case tragically died not long after she was found

A key witness in the Mica Miller case passed away not long after she died by suicide. The story of Mica Miller, and her relationship with pastor JP Miller, has been revisited following the release of Death of the Pastor’s Wife on Netflix. 

A fisherman named Johnnie Jacobs found Mica’s belongings, after she had called 911 and taken her life at Lumber River State Park. After her call with authorities, Robeson County deputies were dispatched to the Lumber River State Park for a well-being check and to attempt to locate Mica. 

During the search, investigators were approached by a man who had found a bag near the water edge with an ID that belonged to Mica. The man explained he had been fishing, when he heard someone crying, and a gunshot. This was Johnnie Jacobs.

Mica Miller died in April 2024, and less than a year later in March 2025, Johnnie also tragically lost his life. As per reports at the time, he passed away in a car accident. The news was first reported on by NewsNation reporter Rich McHugh, who also interviewed JP Miller and featured in Death of the Pastor’s Wife on Netflix. 

The vehicle Johnnie had been in T-boned when it was struck by another car, that had failed to yield at a stop sign. Johnnie, who was 55 at the time, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other driver survived the collision and was transported to a nearby hospital.

Johnnie Jacobs had previously spoken out about Mica Miller, and how the case had changed his life. “She had her license, her bank card, keys in the bag, a little small Bible, her purse, all of her credit cards, and a few receipts and some things,” he told News13 .

“As I decided that I was going to stop fishing, I came back through, stopped where they call it a slew or a lake off of the river. So, I pulled in there with my little boat and, maybe five minutes after, and maybe five minutes into the slew, I heard a cry. I heard it for about two or three minutes. Then I stopped, heard a gunshot. Then, the crying stopped.

“If it had been a person that was crying in the open, I would have checked on them all day long. I just wish I would have gone in there and checked on her. I’m just going to depend on the Lord to get me through this. It’s changed my life, actually.”
